Telford and Wrekin to Move to Tier 2 From Saturday - A Message From Your Union

Like many of you, we are concerned by the news that Telford and Wrekin borough will be moving to Tier 2 restrictions. The change will take effect at 00.01 on Saturday (31 October), which means we will be in Tier 2 (High Alert) from Saturday morning.

The University will remain open, whilst some parts of your university life may look the same as in Tier 1, the new restrictions will undoubtedly affect student life. We are working closely with the University to ensure any changes are in line with government guidance and are clearly communicated. The latest information on the University’s response can be found in the latest email from the Vice-Chancellor - David Llewellyn and in the below infographic.

The SU bar rules in Tier 2 remain unchanged, all tables must be booked as herds or households (rule of six applies). Local pubs in and around Newport will now also operate in this way. Your clubs and societies will continue to operate in our covid-secure manner following specific guidance from BUCS, National Governing Bodies and government guidelines. All sports and societies will continue with our ticket system which allows for effective contact tracing.

As your elected officers, our purpose is to improve the overall experience for current and future students at the University. We will continue to listen and voice student concerns around Coronavirus to the senior management team of the university as the University assesses the impact of the Tier 2 restrictions on its operations.

Over the past few months, we have been working in partnership with the University to deliver the best possible student experience this year and to consider student welfare and wellbeing in all its decisions. We have also continued to call for clear and consistent communications across all areas, and we are about to launch our next student voice survey to gather more feedback on your academic experiences so far this year.

We know this is an uncertain time and your Union and Student Services department are here to support you and help if you have any individual concerns.
