Rowing

Welcome to the Harper Adams University Rowing Club. No matter what your ability or experience our club has a place for you. We are a large and lively club here at Harper, with the aim to provide an enjoyable experience for students actively and socially.

We would like to welcome new members of all abilities to join our club; whether you have the vision to row competitively at some of the many events we enter throughout the year, to row socially, be a cox, or even just to spectate and socialise, we offer a range of memberships.

Feel you don’t fit the typical rowing physique? We want everyone to have the opportunity to have a go and enjoy rowing no matter what, but for those of you who fit the small build to be a cox then we would love to also introduce you to this vital role which is essential within every rowing crew. A cox is like a coach in the boat, steering, executing race strategy, keeping a crew synchronized and motivating rowers to pull harder on their oars. They are so so important; a crew relies on them completely and can’t row without them.

While we may not be at the Oxford or Cambridge level of some of the top universities competing, we sure do know how to have a good time at all events we compete in and always make our entries into them worthwhile. We have a range of members from experienced to completely new rowers starting out at our club.

We train at Pengwern Boat Club in Shrewsbury on the water twice a week, working on technique and then we train once a week on campus with our rowing machines, to work on our fitness. We also do a weekly circuit session which focuses on our strength and endurance.

For the social aspect we meet every Wednesday evening at a pub in Newport before heading to the SU bar, with a different theme every week, we like to keep things interesting! (the socials are not compulsory, and you do not have to drink).

Not only nights out, but we also organise meals out and other events such as BBQ’s and charity fundraisers.

It might be worth noting that we also do just a general fitness membership, for those of you who want to keep fit and workout with your friends but don’t want to jump in a boat. You’ll be able to join in with our circuit training sessions, training on the rowing machines and go on runs with the whole club!
